How To Overcome Challenges During Aircraft Engine Maintenance and Repair?

Engine maintenance is a challenging task for airlines as engines are critical assets that necessitate careful attention and expensive repairs. The planning of spare engines and engine parts is a particularly difficult task that must be carried out for engine repair operations. As such, this blog will present the application of a simulation-based approach utilized for planning the ownership level of spare engines and engine parts needed to achieve target service level and airworthiness.

The application takes both single and multi-location settings into account as well as two levels of modeling: higher and lower level. Higher level modeling consists of repairable components like the engine itself, while lower level modeling focuses on the repair of the individual engine parts. In this case, simulation technology provides the flexibility to model complex features of the engine repair process, such as different engine parts’ repair time predictions, capacity limitations, borrowing of parts and spare engines, removal/installation procedures, and engine harvesting processes.

Beyond such processes, closed-form formulations are also being utilized under specific operational conditions to provide fast calculation and prediction measurements. This application represents a step forward in terms of acquiring more accurate and reliable approaches to estimating the ownership requirements to support American Airlines’ engine maintenance operations and surpass previous procedures. Manual calculations, on the other hand, are susceptible to errors and do not consider the inherent variability of the repair process.
When evaluated against previous manual methodologies, this application demonstrated that substantial financial savings on engine parts can be achieved, with some in the range of millions of dollars. Presently, software implementations of this application are being used by different entities within the Technical Operations (Tech Ops) organization in American Airlines for the planning of ownership requirements of four different engine types and their parts. The acceptance and use of this approach has also paved the way for other key assets like auxiliary power units.
Looking At the Analytics

Generally, the application consists of three types of analytics. First, it processes large sets of repair data for particular engines and their components to obtain parameters that reflect varying aspects of the repair process, including repair times, scrapping rates, repair probabilities, and more. These parameters also serve as valuable insight into the current performance of the repair process. Second, from a predictive perspective, this application provides estimations of the required level spare engines and parts ownership based on the forecasted demand of repairs. Third, on the prescriptive side, this application can be utilized in hypothetical scenarios to suggest the spare ownership level based on different targets on service level and out-of-service (OTS) aircraft performance metrics.

Conclusion

Overall, this simulation-based planning approach has proved to be an invaluable decision support tool for aircraft engine maintenance and repair as well as key to other important operational problems associated with the availability of spare engines and parts.
